Accessing Pharmacy First services

Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals and experts in medicines. They can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for all sorts of minor illnesses, and a same day consultation can be arranged quickly and at a time to suit you.

This in turns frees up GP appointments for those people with more complex symptoms who really need to see a GP.

You can access this service by attending or contacting the pharmacy directly for the following conditions:

Acute otitis media*

1 to 17 years

Impetigo

1 year and over

Infected insect bites

1 year and over

Shingles

18 years and over

Sinusitis

12 years and over

Sore throat

5 years and over

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections

Women 16-64 years

 * Distance selling pharmacies will not complete consultations for acute otitis media.

Pharmacy first

If you have one of the below conditions.

Patients MUST:

  1. Be able to attend in person
  2. Have one of the minor ailments such as athletes foot, belching, backache, coughs, blocked nose, cysts, aches and pain colds, dizziness, constipation, hay fever, sore throat, sprain or strain, teething, warts, thrush, fever, earache, vomiting, rashes, itching, thread worm, head lice, discomfort in abdomen area. These can normally be resolved by non subscribed medication and the conditions usually fade away in a short time. (Some exemptions depending on the long medical conditions apply).

All Pharmacies provide the following services:

  • dispensing
  • repeat dispensing
  • disposal of unwanted or out-of-date medicines
  • advice on treatment of minor health concerns and healthy living

Other services that may be available from your local Pharmacy:

  • Advice on alcohol consumption
  • Blood pressure check
  • Chlamydia screening and treatment service
  • Cholesterol and blood sugar testing
  • Condom supply service
  • Emergency hormonal contraception service
  • Emergency supply of prescription medicines
  • Independent prescribing by Pharmacists – some Pharmacists can now prescribe prescription-only medicines for certain medical conditions
  • Medicines use reviews
  • New Medicine Service
  • NHS Health Check – blood pressure, cholesterol or blood glucose testing
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Stop smoking service
  • Substance misuse service including needle and syringe exchange
  • Weight management service
