Mounjaro - availability in Leeds
Mounjaro is being introduced gradually across the NHS and is currently only available to a small number of patients who meet strict clinical criteria following a clinical assessment. There’s no need to contact the practice – if you are eligible, your GP practice or the NHS will contact you directly. Due to the way the treatment is being phased in, this may take a little time.
In the first year, Mounjaro is only available to patients who have:
- A BMI of 40 or more (adjusted for ethnicity)
- At least 4 of the following health conditions:
- type 2 diabetes
- high blood pressure
- heart disease
- obstructive sleep apnoea
- abnormal blood fats (dyslipidemias)
- Or where urgent weight loss is needed for critical surgery or treatment
If you’re from a South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background, the BMI threshold is slightly lower – 37.5 instead of 40.
Leeds specific information:
West Yorkshire ICB is currently reviewing its commissioning policy/statement for provision for weight management drugs plus non-drug pathways; with consideration of service capacity/resources, etc. A decision is likely to be made towards the end of July.
Since reopening the Leeds Specialist Weight Management Service, they have had a larger number of referrals than anticipated. They are exploring how they manage this volume of referrals. In the meantime, please bear in mind that any new referrals are unlikely to be assessed by the end of July (due to the volume of patients) and those with a BMI above 35 and below 40, are unlikely to be accepted after the end of July.
